Many Frosties are dog owners, and – no matter how cold it is outside – our furry loved ones need to be walked. But while Fido is wearing a fur coat, our Frostie paws may be freezing on a bitter cold, windy day. That’s the perfect day for using a Winter Leash!
Winter Leash is a product created by Mike McMahon, a military veteran and avid dog owner. While not a Raynaud’s sufferer, he still experienced the chill of outdoor exposure on dog walks and saw a need in the market for dog owner comfort in the colder months. Leveraging his experience testing and purchasing military textile products, Mike developed a leash that offers a warm solution for dog walkers.
The product is an oversized mitt that can fit over a glove (or a bare hand for non-Frosties) with two large handles inside for control. Those of us wearing gloves will likely use the larger handle to wrap around the gloved wrist for a firm grip.
The single hand cord lock can be pulled tight to seal out the elements. There’s a zippered utility pocket for holding poop bags, keys, cash, etc., and the contents can go under the retaining band in the pocket to hold them tight inside when the pocket is open (nice touch!). Frosties needing extra warmth might consider inserting a HotHands® or a Grabber® Warmer.
The best part is the fabric: The basic product uses a Polartec® Windbloc material designed to block out wind and moisture. The fabric is smooth on the outside, but soft and fleecy on the inside to hold in the heat. A limited edition version of the product uses Polartec® PowerShield material. This fabric has an even tighter outer weave and softer high-loft fleecy inner lining. The fabric has been discontinued, but Winter Leash has located a supply available in fun colors and currently offers this version in a cool blue. The Windbloc version comes in black and a bright two-tone red/black combination.
We tested both versions on a visit to New Hampshire and the best way to describe the product is a winter coat for your gloves – it’s an added layer of protection and warmth that’s very comfy! Since I was wearing gloves on both hands (hey, it’s winter!), I couldn’t tell the difference in warmth between the two fabrics, but there was definitely a difference in warmth between the hand inside the Winter Leash and the one just wearing my sheepskin gloves which are too thick to fit inside most coat pockets.
The product is available with three options: a self-contained adjustable leash (that comes with reflective webbing), a large carabiner closure to use your existing leash(es), or a swivel shackle to avoid tangling of one or multiple leashes while walking more than one dog at a time. Many features (e.g. easy-open trigger snaps, large zipper pull, single-hand cord locks) were specially designed for easy operation – even with fumbling cold hands!
Most materials are made here in the U.S. and meet Mike’s experienced military standards for strength and durability.
