I have noticed for the past month or so that I am having trouble growing my finger nails and this past 2 weeks I am also getting hangnails and cuts near my nails. My fingers and hands get the brunt of my condition so I thought there may be some relationship.

I have deep ridges on my nails (cuticle to the tip) and they have become very brittle. Do you know if that is from the Raynaud's?

Nail abnormalities can be associated with Raynaud's as well as with a number of disorders that can have Raynaud's as a secondary condition. Here is a link to an article that discusses this: http://www.aafp.org/afp/2004/0315/p1417.html

I, too, experience problems with hang nails and on my left middle finger the finger nail feels weird like it's misshapen. That's the only way I can describe it. The nail doesn't hurt (but my fingertip is sensitive).

I have been experiencing this problem for nearly 5 years and I have yet to find a cure. I have tried several methods of treating this over the years but so far nothing seems to work. Has anyone else had any luck curing/preventing this?

Any help would be invaluable, thanks in advance.

Does any one get a horizontal ridge across all of their nails the next summer from the trauma of the previous winter? Nails take about 6 months to grow out so the results are from the previous season.

Judy, I get a line (more a valley than a ridge) across my nails during the winter that takes till summer to grow out. Last year the valleys were deeper than in past years ... so deep, in fact, that the nails cracked at the valleys. Only recently have my nails grown out to the point where they're looking normal ... and winter is just around the corner.

I've not gotten a clear answer from my doctors as to whether these lines are caused by Raynaud's or by my underlying scleroderma.

Wow, that's interesting. I've also had my nails crack and split along that ridge as it was growing out to the point of having a hole in my nail. Last winter was particularly cold here in TN, so I'm sure that did not help. I've only had this problem the last few years. I've had Raynauds for about 40 years, but it's gotten much worse in the last few years.

Anyone get small cracks under their nails. It looks like a small sliver of wood jammed under the nail. It really hurts for 3 or 4 days and then goes away. luckily it doesn't happen too often.

I mentioned the sliver thing once to a doctor, but she looked at me like I was crazy, so I never mentioned it again.

Stevie, it sounds as though you may be experiencing splinter hemorrhages.

This article was mentioned earlier in this thread, but I think it's worth repeating the link for anyone who has weird nail issues:

Thanks for pointing that out Judith. The picture of the splinter hemorrhage sure looks like what I occasionally get.

I also get what looks like blood under the skin and nails. The ones under the skin clear up after a few weeks, but the blood under the nail has to grow out.
