Rather than succumb to the pain, Mike invented a handy handle-based solution. His daughter Tara was intrigued by her dad’s invention and improved upon it, making it lighter in weight, more sturdy and compact – opening it up to multiple uses for holding, hooking or carrying items.
For us Frosties, the key benefit is in being able to hold and work with cold glasses, bottles or containers with full control – no gloves or fear of slipping, and no pain from touching cold objects.
The product has three main components:
- Handle – made of lightweight, but sturdy plastic, and ergonomically designed for a comfortable grip. Holds up to 30 lbs.
- Two Adjustable Straps – that easily secure around objects with Velcro® for a custom fit. Available in 3 lengths (9, 11.5 and 19 inches).
- Magnet – located on the top of the handle for holding metal tools or objects while working (useful for handyman applications)
I first tried holding a tall glass with the Add-A-Handle® and found it fit well and felt pretty steady. My next challenge was a pint of ice cream from the freezer (brrrr!). I was able to attach the pint easily. The fit was secure enough to dig in with an ice cream scoop while comfortably holding the handle without touching the cold container once it’s strapped in.
The product would also be great for holding chilled wine, tall soda bottles and other items fresh out of the fridge or freezer.
For those with secondary Raynaud’s with ailments such as scleroderma and rheumatoid arthritis, the product offers a useful tool for handling difficult-to-grab objects. There are also many additional applications for Add-A-Handle®, such as toting hard-to-carry items like beach chairs and strollers, and many applications for do-it-yourselfers in their workshops.
One caveat: The handle is a little over 5½ inches tall, so whatever object you plan to attach and want to have sit on a solid surface while you’re using it (like a glass or a food container) needs to be at least that tall. The ice cream pint was too short, but a quart or larger would have worked perfectly.
The handle was originally designed intentionally to be taller than the object – initially a paint can – so that the paintbrush placed on the magnet sits over the can to allow for the paint to drip. For objects to be used this way, each strap can be assembled and the object then placed inside the straps and tightened.
Add-A-Handle® is proud to be a woman-owned business, and all parts and manufacturing are made in the USA.
