Manuka Honey for Digital Ulcers

In our Spring 2021 Member Tips column, we published tips on how over-the-counter products have helped heal digital ulcers for some Raynaud’s sufferers.  Here’s a new one – manuka honey!  This specific type of honey is made by bees that collect nectar from the manuka plant native to New Zealand and Australia.

Manuka honey differs from the standard grocery product in that it is darker in color, has a unique taste and texture, and contains the highest amount of flavonoid compounds.  We’ve published articles in the past on the potential circulatory benefits of flavonoids (An Orange a Day Keeps the Cold Away?, Guilt-Free Chocolate Benefits for Frosties).  Now we’re learning that flavonoids also provide skincare benefits by helping to fight off several skin stressors, plus help skin stay hydrated and soft.  Could this product also work to heal digital ulcers?  Kristina told us on Facebook she had ulcers from May to July.  She applied manuka honey on July 16th and by July 24th they were completely healed!

This is the first time we’ve heard this approach to healing ulcers, but flavonoids and their antioxidant properties are getting a lot of press lately, so maybe it’s worth a try!  Thanks Kristina for sharing your positive experience with us.
